what's holding period return?
HPR is the return for the period. for my case, its a monthly period
If you got $48 as a dividend in the month of April than how it is possible that your stocks portfolio was down by 2.64% at the end of April 2010. please give explanation. I am confused here.
the 2.64% is (market value of portfolio + dividends collected so far) / total portfolio cost. this is just an absolute return since the i started investing. the return does not adjust for time.
for example, if i have put in 100k and portfolio is 90k + 10k total dividends, my absolute return is 0%
HPR = +4.3% is my return for the month of April
hope that helps
